We search for the finest statues from master Indonesian carvers who use premier carving hardwoods carefully chosen for their colour, grain and resistance to cracking. These master artisans work at home and involve the whole family in a tradition that has gone on for generations and even centuries. The woods of choice are crocodile, sono, suar and waru (hibiscus). Although dense, each of these woods can be carved into fine detail. We choose each sculpture for its beautiful craftsmanship, polished finish and distinctive face. Though cracking can occasionally occur when hardwoods are exposed to dry climates, it is often minimal and rarely disfiguring. Minor cracks can bestow an appealing antique appearance, or can easily be filled if desired. They can also remind us of the impermanence of all things, one of the Buddha’s three universal characteristics of existence.
